KA MAU TE WEHI! Awesome Room 6!



A great start to our school year with some awesome news!!!

Last year Room's 6 & 15 entered a competition to design a new NED (Never give up, Encourage others, Do your best!) button.

This was a very exciting project and last years Room 6 class really got into it, coming up with some innovative and exciting designs.

Over the Christmas holiday period I received an email from the USA letting me know that one of our students was a finalist in the Design a NED Button competition from over 3000 students, world wide. WOW, very exciting!!!

This week has been about getting to know each other and setting up our class environment. 

Reading is fun and very comfortable. In Room 6 we can choose where we want to read or work on our writing, depending on what is most comfortable for us! 




WEEK 2

We have begun to a new class programme for Literacy called Daily 5

My goal is to introduce classroom routines and structures in a way that removes all of the guesswork from the children and allows them to concentrate fully on learning. In reading and writing, the classroom structure I will be using is called “Daily Five”.

The Daily Five is a literacy structure that teaches independence and gives children the skills needed to create a lifetime love of reading and writing. It consists of five tasks that are introduced individually. When introduced to each task, the children discuss what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like to engage in the task independently. Then, the children work on building their stamina until they are successful at being independent while doing that task.

The five tasks include:
1. Read to self
2. Read to someone
3. Listen to reading
4. Work on writing
5. Word work

When all five tasks have been introduced and the children are fully engaged in reading and writing activities, I am able to work with small groups and confer with children one on one.

This structure is effective, the results are amazing, and the children really look forward to Daily Five time. Ask your child about Daily Five and see what he/she has to say. I anticipate your child will tell you about the class stamina, how we are working towards independence, and maybe you will even hear about some of the fantastic things your child has written, read, or listened to during our structured reading time.

This Thursday 11th February we have our mix and mingle picnic and meet the teacher evening. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances I will not be available for our meet the teacher meeting. I have however, sent our class newsletter and information about our class programme and timetables home today. Please click on the links below to view.

We are still learning about blog's, especially me! So together we will be sharing our work and the happenings of Room 6 with you on a weekly basis. We are working towards the students taking responsibility for uploading our class blog week by week. So watch this space!!!
